Spiritual Health Beyond Religion: Finding the Golden Thread
In a world of noise and distraction, it’s easy to lose sight of deeper meaning. Many of us wake up, rush through work and obligations, and collapse into bed — only to repeat the cycle the next day. Yet somewhere within us, there’s a longing for something more: a sense of connection that transcends daily grind, a thread that ties our life to something larger than ourselves.
This is the essence of spiritual health. It is not about rigid rituals or subscribing to a particular creed. Rather, it’s about cultivating a connection to Intent — that deeper current of meaning, purpose, and alignment that makes life coherent.

Beyond Religion: A Wider Lens
For centuries, spirituality was almost exclusively tied to organized religion. But today, more and more people identify as “spiritual but not religious.” Surveys by the Pew Research Center show that while religious affiliation is declining in many countries, the search for meaning, transcendence, and connection remains strong.
Religion remains a very potent mechanism to connect with our spirituality. Hundreds of millions around the world maintains a very healthy spiritual lifestyle through religion. But spiritual health goes beyond dogma. It encompasses practices that give life meaning — meditation, service, art, gratitude, reflection, or simply walking in nature with a sense of awe.
Viktor Frankl, Holocaust survivor and author of Man’s Search for Meaning, put it powerfully: “Those who have a ‘why’ to live can bear almost any ‘how.’”
When you find your “why,” you tap into spiritual health — the strength that sustains you in hardship and magnifies your joy in times of abundance.
The Golden Thread of Connection
According to The Daily Life of Resolute Beings – Be Resourceful, at its core, spiritual health is about connection:
Connection to self — living in alignment with your Intent, values, and truth.
Connection to others — recognizing the humanity, dignity, and sacredness in relationships.
Connection to the world — experiencing awe, wonder, and gratitude for creation.
Connection to the transcendent — however you define it: God, the universe, collective consciousness, or simply the mystery of life.
When you weave these connections together, you discover a golden thread — a sense of coherence that grounds you. Without it, life can feel fragmented, as though each day is disconnected from the next. With it, even ordinary tasks take on extraordinary significance.
Spiritual Health Expands Human Capacity
Humans are born with boundless potential. Over millennia, we have shown a remarkable capacity to grow and progress, to expand and evolve. Our bodies and minds are capable of fantastic feats. As a species, we keep pushing the boundaries of achievement, with every generation reaching further and higher than the one before.
But we have also proven that our potential is limited to our capacity. We are like cups held under an open tap of water. The water keeps flowing, but our potential to carry water is limited by the size of our cup. The bigger the cup, the more water (potential) it can hold. The fantastic news is that humans have the innate capability to grow and expand — almost like balloons that cannot pop. We can grow our cup bigger and bigger, but the only way to do that is to grow spiritually.
Spiritual health expands human capacity, both as individuals and as a species. Spiritual health reflects our connection with Intent, and the strength of the bond determines how much energy we are plugged into and can flow through us. The more energy we are connected to, the more our capacity expands to receive and distribute energy.
Spiritual Health and Intent
Intent is one of the cornerstones of the Resolute Life. In my series of book, I describe Intent as the universal energy inside and around all of us, the energy that underpins and directs life toward meaning. The Resolute Life, therefore, is not merely about goals or ambition, but about alignment — ensuring that your daily choices, energy, and relationships flow in harmony with your deeper purpose.
Spiritual health is the practice of strengthening your connection to this Purpose, with Intent. When you are spiritually healthy, you are less distracted by shallow pursuits and more rooted in what truly matters. You begin to experience clarity: a sense that your decisions and actions are not random but connected to something larger, something enduring.
This is why spiritual health cannot be ignored. It is not just an “optional extra” for seekers or mystics. It is the foundation that keeps your life congruent. It transforms how you see challenges, reframes suffering into growth, and anchors you in a deeper hope.
List of Spiritual Practices
Just like jogging and eating healthy promotes physical health, and partaking in hobbies promotes mental health, there are activities, practices and rituals that promote spiritual health. Some of these activities resemble those used to stimulate mental and emotional health, but the focus of these activities are different. For example, meditation helps mental, emotional and spiritual growth, but in the case of spiritual growth the focus of meditation is on the transcendent, the mystical, the sacred – our connection with Intent.
The most important action you can take for your spiritual health is to Live with Intent. The 1st Principle guiding the Daily Life of Resolute Beings is a tapestry weaved from the golden thread of spiritual health. The entire principle is aimed at strengthening your connection with the energy that is all around us and within us. Living with Intent is about expanding your awareness, sensitizing you to the mystical, sacred and fantastic fundamentals of Life. Connecting you with Intent and connecting you with yourself are the primary features of Living with Intent.
The spiritual practices listed below can be used to Live with Intent, but can also be used to promote spiritual health:
Meditation – Spiritual meditation focuses on strengthening your connection with Intent and bringing balance to your five dimensions.
Prayer – An act of communication with the sacred/holy, whether personal or communal. Its purpose is direct, open connection with the transcendent.
Spiritual chanting – Focus your attention on the vibrations of the mantra and allow it to cleanse your connection with the energy around you.
Engagement with nature – Immersing yourself in natural surroundings is a pure spiritual experience, grounding you in the energy of creation.
Focused reading – Deeply study spiritual texts or sacred writings with reflection and contemplation to expand awareness.
Self-reflective journaling – Writing down your encounters and reflections reveals the spiritual motifs woven into daily life.
Fasting – Discipline body and mind to prioritize spiritual focus; consult professionals before long-term fasting.
Detox – Remove dependence on specific objects, habits, or relationships to restore balance and spiritual focus.
Use of substances – In some traditions, substances like teas or hallucinogens (when used carefully and within established practices) can enhance spiritual encounters.
Create a meditation altar or sacred space – A dedicated space strengthens your ability to connect with the transcendent through conditioning and environment.
Use scents and oils – Aromas calm the environment and help condition the body and mind for spiritual focus.
Join a spiritual community – Surround yourself with like-minded seekers; shared practices deepen connection.
Incorporate spirituality into your daily routine – Derive peace from simple acts like cooking, walking, or cleaning, seeing the sacred in the ordinary.
Live uncomplicated – Declutter and simplify your life so energy can flow freely across all dimensions.
Live with Intent. Be Resourceful
The search for spiritual health is not about finding the “right” ritual or subscribing to a label. It is about connection — to yourself, to others, to the world, and ultimately to Intent. It is about expanding your capacity to live fully, purposefully, and in alignment with your deepest truth.
A spiritually healthy life is not necessarily a perfect life. But it is a coherent one, where meaning threads through even the darkest valleys. In this coherence lies resilience, hope, and a quiet, enduring joy.
