A Journey to Personal Optimization: Discover Your Abilities

It sounds so common sense, but in the pursuit of personal and professional development, understanding your strengths and weaknesses is paramount. Despite the ubiquitous nature of discussions around these concepts, many individuals still struggle to accurately identify their own attributes. Having spent significant time in the human resources sector, conducting numerous interviews and guiding others through introspective processes, I've observed firsthand the pervasive misunderstanding and superficial engagement individuals have with their own personal strengths and weaknesses.

The Importance of Knowing Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Imagine a carpenter attempting to master their craft without knowing which tools they possess or how to use them. Now imagine a budding entrepreneur who cannot effectively seize business opportunities because he struggles to identify them. Similarly, the journey of personal optimization cannot begin without a candid and vulnerable assessment of your own tools and opportunities. The reason so many people struggle with this process, is because it requires setting aside ego and embracing the truth about oneself.

Be Resourceful Quote

A highly effective tool for this introspection is the SWOT analysis, typically used in corporate settings but equally valuable for personal growth. In my book “The Daily Life of Resolute Beings, I introduce the “Resolute SWOT Matrix” which is tailored for individual use and facilitates a structured evaluation of internal strengths and weaknesses alongside external opportunities and threats.

Understanding the Resolute SWOT Matrix

The Resolute SWOT Matrix
The Resolute SWOT Matrix

The Resolute SWOT Matrix guide exploration of the standard SWOT elements of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and strengths, but as the relate to the 5 Dimensions of human existence. These dimensions are physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual. Under each of the 5 dimensions, it guides you toward identifying:

  • Strengths: Personal resources that you possess and can control, which you can utilize to promote your Personal Intent. Strengths come in three forms: Innate talents, acquired skills, and tangible/intangible assets that contribute positively to personal goals.

  • Weaknesses: Personal attributes and resources (or a lack of resources) which can obstruct the flow of Intent and limit your ability to reach your destiny, but still remain under your control.

  • Opportunities: Favourable external circumstances outside of your direct control which you can leverage to your advantage, such as favourable economic conditions or supportive social networks.

  • Threats: Unfavourable external circumstances outside of your direct control which can threaten your Personal Intent and/or your resources, such as economic downturns or health issues.

How to Conduct a Resolute SWOT Analysis

  1. Identifying Obvious Strengths and Weaknesses: Start by listing talents, skills, and resources that are readily apparent. Consider both personal attributes and tangible possessions. Remember to consider all 5 Dimensions

  2. Exploring Less Obvious Attributes: Delve deeper into less apparent strengths and weaknesses by reflecting on spontaneous reactions, activities you find especially energizing or cumbersome, and by asking those you trust for feedback.

  3. External Environmental Analysis: Utilize the PESTLE tool (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, Environmental) to assess external factors influencing personal objectives. This tool helps in identifying both opportunities and threats in the broader context.

  4. Applying the 5x5 Risk Matrix: Evaluate the likelihood and impact of identified opportunities and threats using a structured risk assessment approach. This helps prioritize which elements require immediate attention and which are less critical.

Understanding the 'Dark Side' of Strengths

While conducting the Resolute SWOT Analysis, keep in mind that strengths ad weaknesses are sometimes contextually sensitive. An act that could be viewed as good and positive in one context or could be viewed as bad and negative in another context.  Our strengths generally contribute to reaching our goals and objectives, but can also lead to exactly the opposite in certain circumstances.  A friend of mine has an unshakable perseverance in the face of hardship.  His iron will has allowed him to push through the most terrible financial difficulties, and this strength is one of the main contributors to his current success.  However, he is also one of the most hard-headed people I know, and his hard-headedness has often been the actual cause of his difficulties to begin with.  In certain situations, his strong will has been his weakness. Every strength has a potential downside depending on the context. Recognizing these dual aspects helps you gain a more holistic understanding of your abilities and where and how to optimize them.

Regular Re-evaluation for Continuous Growth

Strengths and opportunities, as well as weaknesses and threats, are not fixed elements. The dynamic nature of your environment and your continuous growth within it means that these aspects are always in flux. During your journey as a Resolute Being, you will develop new strengths and overcome certain weaknesses, while seizing opportunities and mitigating threats. Simultaneously, new challenges will emerge as unexpected weaknesses and threats. Thus, conducting a Resolute SWOT Analysis should be a recurring process, regularly reassessing your resources.

Think of your resources like a vast warehouse. This warehouse ships products to customers and receives new inventory from suppliers daily. It also encounters supply chain disruptions that affect its stock levels and service capabilities. Effective stock management requires a system to regularly control and assess inventory, as well as monitor the supply chain for potential threats and opportunities. Without such a system, the warehouse would be unaware of its stock levels or the risks it faces, leading to losses and a diminished capacity to fulfill orders, which would ultimately result in unhappy customers. In a similar manner, you need to routinely 'take stock' of your resources to stay informed about the current state of your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

In summary, discovering and optimizing personal resources through a structured approach like the Resolute SWOT Matrix empowers individuals to navigate life's complexities with clarity and purpose. By understanding and leveraging strengths, addressing weaknesses, seizing opportunities, and mitigating threats, individuals can embark on a path of continuous growth and fulfilment. By embracing this journey of self-discovery and resource optimization, individuals can unlock their full potential and lead a resolute life aligned with their deepest aspirations. In my book “The Daily Life of Resolute Beings” we go on a deep dive into optimizing your resources to achieve your life goals and ultimately life a fulfilled, meaningful life.
