In the journey of life, navigating towards personal fulfilment and accomplishment requires not only a clear sense of direction but also a strategic roadmap. This roadmap is constructed through the art of goal setting, a process that bridges your present circumstances with your envisioned future. Imagine goal setting as your GPS, providing the detailed route towards your destination, while your Intent (Destiny) acts as the compass, guiding you towards your ultimate personal purpose and meaning in life.

The Importance of Goal Setting
Goal setting serves as the practical manifestation of your intentions. While Living with Intent (the 1st Principle of a Resolute Life) provides clarity of purpose, setting goals translates that purpose into actionable steps. This process ensures that every action aligns with your personal Intent, thereby maximizing the impact of your efforts, allowing you to Be Resourceful (the 2nd Principle of a Resolute Life).
Therefore, when you calibrate your GPS by creating your goals, make sure they are always aligned with your personal Intent (your purpose, your destiny) to avoid wasting resources on paths that don't lead towards your desired destination. Whether it's achieving career milestones, maintaining health goals, or fostering meaningful relationships, each goal should serve as a milestone on your journey towards personal fulfillment.
Goal-setting theory, as developed by Latham & Locke (1979), states that conscious goals affect action and conscious human behaviour is purposeful and regulated by individual goals. There are three practical ways in which goal setting promotes Being Resourceful:
Goals get you moving into the direction in which you were intended to go.
Goals map out what you must do today to reach your dreams.
Goals help identify which resources you will need and how you should optimally utilize them.
The process of Resolute Goal Setting
Research have shown that when goals have the following characteristics, its leads to high performance and successful accomplishment.
Inspirational: Goals should inspire and motivate, reflecting your deepest aspirations.
Visual: Visualizing success enhances motivation and commitment.
Challenging: Goals should stretch your abilities without being unattainable.
Micro-goals: Breaking down larger objectives into smaller, achievable steps increases success rates.
Social Influence: Humans do not live and work in isolation, and all of us are impacted by the people around us. Goals that acknowledge social influences always have a bigger probability of success.
By keeping these elements of inspirational goals in mind, bridge the gap between your future destiny and our current strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats through Resolute Goal Setting. Establish goals and milestones for the next 5 years. Then break that down into smaller goals for the first year and break that down into micro-goals for every 8 to 12 weeks. When creating these goals, use the SMARTER tool to guide your contemplation.
S | Specific | Your goals should be clear and specific. Avoid vague descriptions that make it difficult to understand what the objectives are. |
M | Measurable | You should be able to measure your success in reaching your goal. In other words, it should be quantifiable. |
A | Achievable | Your goal should be realistic. Your goals should certainly push you towards an accomplishment, but is should not be irrational. |
R | Relevant | Your goals should be linked to your dream and Personal Intent. Your goals should act as small steps you have to accomplish on your way to your destiny. |
T | Time-bound | Your goals should have a deadline attached to it. A deadline will help you to stay focused and not get lost in the chaos that erupts around us from time to time. |
E | Evaluate | Check your goal's progress regularly. For example, spend a few minutes at the end of each week to check what you have done over the past week to achieve your micro-goals. |
R | Readjust | Be prepared to change your goals if needed. You need to be agile enough to understand when you must make adjustments to reach your end-goals. |
The Fluidity of Resolute Living
Living a resolute life acknowledges the dynamic nature of personal growth. It requires both determination and adaptability. Sometimes, unforeseen circumstances may necessitate adjusting your goals to better align with your evolving understanding of your personal Intent (your personal Purpose). This flexibility allows you to embrace new opportunities and challenges without losing sight of your ultimate destination.
This characteristic of the Resolute Life becomes clearly evident when you come to an unexpected fork in the road. These are the times when you realise that whatever carefully crafted plans you had for the future, you will have to change it to be true to your Personal Intent. This happened to me when I met my wife. As a single, professional individual living in Cape Town, my plans for the short to medium term definitely did not include getting married – even less becoming a dad to a two-and-a-half-year-old boy. I was focused on my career and just got into the local social scene after moving from Johannesburg. And then she walked into my life, and I just knew that my destiny included her. Believe me, changing from a very single guy to a full-time dad within a couple of months was not easy but it brought me more in line with Intent, and elevated the meaning of my life. It gave me an awareness of my Personal Intent like nothing I have experienced up to that point. Yes, I had to change almost everything in my life and adjust my goals accordingly. But planning a new path for myself was easy due to the incredible power of conviction I gained about my destiny.
Therefore, it is clear that goal setting isn't a one-time task but a continuous process woven into the fabric of daily life. When we embrace the fluidity of the Daily Life of Resolute Beings, we come to the realisation that goal setting is not a task that we complete once per year. It is not just some New Years Resolution that you do at the beginning and then try to accomplish during the year. Goal setting is an ongoing, fluid lifestyle habit that guides your life, your behaviour.
Yes, there are times where in-depth planning is necessary. Yes, we need formal cycles of goal setting and resetting in our life. But the goal setting that form part of the Resolute Life is much more than that. It is a practice that becomes second nature, so part of your daily life that before your every move you can analyse and plan in an instant, make a decision and go for it. It is a powerful combination of regular formal planning, preparation, forecasting and goal-setting, and daily informal action planning and organization. Every day present new opportunities and you should maximise the benefit from every opportunity. To do this you need to be able to set formal goals and throw yourself towards reaching those goals via a flexible, informal daily lifestyle.
Achieving your goals involves both formal planning sessions and spontaneous adjustments based on daily realities. This approach ensures that your goals remain relevant and responsive to changing circumstances.
Your daily dose of discipline
Agility is not the only secret to success. While we must learn the wisdom to know when to adapt, it is equally important to know when to remain disciplined and push through when things get tough. Being successful is not easy – it is damn hard. If it was easy, everyone would have lived the Resolute Lifestyle.
Reaching your goals often requires you to stick to your plans during the times when most people would simply give up. The Daily Life of Resolute Beings is most certainly a life of fulfilment, success and connection – but also a life of resilience. It is a life that demands the self-discipline to push through the pain towards success and accomplishment. It is a way of living that does not know the concept of giving up. It is about doing the work no matter what.
Jim Rohn said that “[d]iscipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.”
Talented people are often guilty of not pushing through. They have become so used to getting it easy, that they rather give up when things get difficult and try something else they think would be easier to achieve through their talent alone. Their life often become characterised by jumping from one thing to the next, achieving many small to medium sized accomplishments but failing to achieve anything meaningful. These are the schoolyard wonder-boys and wonder-girls that never really live up to their potential as adults.
‘Talent without discipline is like an octopus on roller skates. There's plenty of movement, but you never know if it's going to be forward, backwards, or sideways” (H Jackson Brown Jr.).
Without discipline, even the most talented people end up being active without ever accomplishing anything worthwhile.
On the other hand, every extremely successful person has an almost unbreakable iron will to succeed. When they have set their mind on an objective, they become almost obsessive in their quest to its achievement. No matter what is thrown their way, the keep grinding, keep pushing, keep going forward until they have achieved their goal. Take Olympic athletes as an example. While they undoubtedly have tremendous talent, it is their indestructible self-discipline over many years that moulded that talent into Olympic gold. Self-discipline is most often the difference between have a Resolute Life and a mediocre one.
Conclusion
In essence, goal setting is the art of turning intention into reality. By aligning your actions with your personal Intent, setting SMARTER goals, you pave the way for personal growth and fulfillment. Achieving your goals requires a balance of discipline and agility. Discipline provides the perseverance to overcome obstacles, while agility allows for adjustments in response to changing circumstances. This dual approach ensures progress towards your Intent (destiny) while remaining adaptable to life's curveballs.
In the end, it's not just about reaching the finish line of your goals—it's about the transformative journey you undertake to become the person capable of achieving them.
