“I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong.” John Lennon
Our Spiritual Dimension is the most difficult to grasp because it concerns itself with the mystical, the untouchable, the transcendent. This is exactly what distinguishes itself from everything else – physical, mental, emotional and social – its connection with the transcendent, the power/energy that is all around us. It implies being connected to something larger than oneself and this connection provides a sense of meaning in life, a personal and universal purpose. Spirituality always involves ethereal experiences and provides glimpses of the sacred, the divine.

It is spirituality that binds everything together like a golden thread. The sacred energy, the higher power that lives within us, also lives within everything. It represents life itself, and as long as we are alive, we are connected to the spiritual. Therefore, spiritual health is concerned with our connection to Intent, the sacred, mystical, fantastic energy that exists around us and within us. Spiritual health is about fostering a connection to something larger than ourselves, providing us with a profound sense of meaning and purpose both personally and universally. It encompasses ethereal experiences and offers glimpses of the divine, anchoring our lives in a greater context of significance and interconnectedness.
Spiritual Health and Living with Intent
Spiritual health, therefore, is intimately linked to the 1st Principle of the Resolute Life - Live with Intent. This principle emphasizes our continuous and conscious connection to the sacred energy that flows through and around us.
However, understanding that spirituality is distinct from religion is crucial here. While spirituality intersects with religious beliefs, its essence transcends the rituals, symbols, traditions, and practices created by humans. Religion, particularly within a community context, can complement and enhance our spiritual experience, but it should not be conflated with the sacred energy from which it originates. Humans are fallible and our interpretation of the unknowable is always linked to our understanding of the world and ourselves. Our awareness of the sacred cannot exceed our understanding of the world, but since the sacred is bigger than our perceptual grasp, humans often misunderstand the spiritual. Therefore, spiritual health is about continuous expansion of our understanding of the mystical, an expansion that traverse time, space and religious practices.
Spiritual health expands human capacity
Humans are born with boundless potential. Over millennia, we have shown a remarkable capacity to grow and progress, to expand to evolve. Our bodies and minds are capable of fantastic feats. As a species, we keep pushing the boundaries of achievement, with every generation proving to reach further and higher than the generation before.
But we have also proven that our potential is limited to our capacity. We are like cups held under an open tap of water. The water keeps flowing but our potential to carry water is limited by the size of our cup. The bigger the cup, the more water (potential) it can hold. The fantastic news is that humans have the innate capability to grow and expand – almost like balloons that cannot pop. We can grow our cup bigger and bigger, but the only way to do that is to grow spiritually.
Spiritual health expands human capacity, both as individuals and as a species. Spiritual health reflects our connection with Intent, and the strength of the bond determines how much energy we are plugged into and can flow through us. The more energy we are connected to, the more our capacity expands to receive and distribute energy.
The Four Themes of Spiritual Health
Across various religions, faiths, and spiritual beliefs, four recurring themes underpin the concept of spiritual health:
Theme 1: Connection with the Transcendent: This theme is the cornerstone of spirituality, recognizing the existence of a sacred, transcendent energy (referred to by various names such as God, Jehovah, Allah, Brahman, Gaia, Tao, Wakan Taka). In the Daily Life of Resolute Beings, it is called Intent. Spiritual health pertains to our relationship with this higher power.
Theme 2: Connection with the Self: Spiritual health is closely tied to personal growth and development, emphasizing self-awareness and fulfilment
Theme 3: Connection with Others: Most religions promote social cohesion and personal sacrifice for the greater good. Even outside organized religion, spirituality underscores kindness and helping others.
Theme 4: Connection with Nature: Many belief systems regard nature as a sacred creation, recognizing the profound connection between humans and the natural world. Nature is often seen as a precious entity that humans are tasked to protect and preserve.
Given that spirituality interweaves all aspects of life, spiritual health impacts all other dimensions of our existence. Numerous health studies have linked spiritual health with improved mental and physical health, and countless examples globally demonstrate the positive social effects of spirituality on communities.
Improving Spiritual Health: Re-energize and grow.
Achieving balance across the five dimensions of health is possible only through spiritual health.
Firstly, spiritual rest, recuperation, and re-energizing involve absorbing energy by connecting with Intent. This internal focus is essential for cultivating inner peace, contentment, and harmony amidst life's turbulence and uncertainties. On the other hand, while spiritual rest involves absorbing energy, spiritual growth focuses on the flow and distribution of this energy. It entails allowing Intent's energy to flow through us, cultivating empathy, compassion, gratitude, and forgiveness. This external focus fosters emotional well-being and interconnectedness with others.
Let’s explore the how we can use the four themes for our spiritual re-energizing and growth.
Theme 1: Connection with the Transcendent
Re-energize: This aspect focuses on our direct relationship with the source of all energy. Practices aimed at this connection should expand our awareness and understanding of the transcendent, leading to enlightenment. The result is a deeper conviction of life's meaning and an understanding of our higher purpose.
Growth: When you are intimately connected with Intent, you cannot resist the desire to share its qualities. You become an inspirational distributor of divine energy, leading others on a path of increased awareness and enlightenment. Like an expanding pipeline, your spirituality grows as your capability to channel energy grows.
Theme 2: Connection with the Self
Re-energize: Heightened awareness of Intent fosters increased self-awareness. Recognizing our role in the grand scheme of things leads to discovering our personal meaning and purpose. This aspect of spiritual health involves realizing our inner energy and the direction it is guiding us toward our destiny.
Growth: Our connection with Intent enhances our personal power, boosting growth and development. This aspect focuses on 'becoming,' fulfilling our destiny through improved self-awareness, leading to personal perfection.
Theme 3: Connection with Others
Re-energize: Our spiritual health is bolstered through relationships with others. Spiritual rest and rejuvenation occur by tapping into the energy of companionship and kinship. Social activities enhance our spiritual connections with others, resulting in a sense of spiritual community and deeper interpersonal bonds.
Growth: A growing sense of community drives us toward self-sacrifice and helping others. Spiritual growth involves serving others, breaking social barriers, and fighting discrimination, thereby fostering a sense of communal harmony.
Theme 4: Connection with Nature
Re-energize: Nature serves as a pure conduit for spiritual vitality. By immersing ourselves in nature, we can access its abundant energy, leaving us feeling rested, energized, and at peace.
Growth: As our spiritual connection with nature strengthens, so does our instinct to protect and preserve it. This heightened concern for the environment reflects our growing spirituality, leading us to reduce our impact on the world.
List of Spiritual Practices
Just as jogging and healthy eating promote physical health, specific activities, practices, and rituals foster spiritual health. Some practices overlap with those used for mental and emotional well-being but focus on different aspects. For instance, meditation aids mental, emotional, and spiritual growth, but spiritual meditation centers on the transcendent and the sacred—our connection with Intent.
Here are some practices that promote spiritual health and help us Live with Intent:
Meditation: Spiritual meditation focuses on connecting with Intent and balancing the five dimensions of health.
Prayer: Seen as a focused form of meditation, prayer is about direct communication with the sacred. It can be personal or communal and varies in technique but always aims to connect with the transcendent.
Spiritual Chanting: This practice involves focusing on the sound and vibrations of the mantra, cleansing our connection with the surrounding energy and touching the divine.
Engagement with Nature: Immersing oneself in nature is a pure spiritual experience. Mindfully engaging with nature's energy can profoundly enhance spiritual health.
Focused Reading: Reading spiritual texts fosters spiritual health. This involves deep contemplation and allowing the material to expand our awareness.
Self-Reflective Journaling: Journaling enhances awareness of the mystical dimensions of life by recording and reflecting on personal experiences.
Fasting: Fasting disciplines the body and mind to prioritize spiritual focus, realigning the balance between physical and spiritual dimensions.
Detox: Removing dependencies on physical, mental, social, or emotional objects through spiritual focus restores balance and prioritizes spiritual awareness.
Use of Substances: Though controversial, substances like herbal teas or, in some cultures, hallucinogens, can enhance spiritual experiences when used responsibly and within traditional contexts.
Creating a Sacred Space: Practicing spiritual activities in a designated sacred space enhances our connection with the transcendent through conditioned responses.
Using Scents and Oils: Fragrances and aromas create a calm environment conducive to spiritual experiences.
Joining a Spiritual Community: Connecting with like-minded individuals through activities like yoga, visiting spiritual centers, or attending festivals supports spiritual health.
Incorporating Spirituality into Daily Routine: Finding meaning and gratitude in daily activities fosters a sense of spiritual vitality and interconnectedness.
Living Uncomplicate: Simplifying life and reducing dependence on material possessions allows energy to flow freely across all dimensions, promoting spiritual health.
